Syllabus & Rubrics

  1. Timeframe:
    January 23-March 9, 2012 (Trimester 2, Marking Period 2)

    Grading:
Literary Theory Notes: You will earn 10 points for clear notes right after each Literary Theory lecture to ensure that you were paying attention and actively taking notes; in case of absence, you must copy notes from someone else and show them to me sometime that week, no later than Friday for a maximum of 5 points. Only in cases where you have a parent note can you earn all 10 points when absent.

Blogging: Your participation and contributions to our online blog will be your primary homework grade for this unit. You must submit 2 blog entries each week, no later than Sunday at 12:00 a.m. Your blog posts must be 200-250 words (no more, no less) and make specific reference to the text-you must cite at least one quote in your entry. One blog post must be your own analysis and the other blog post must be a response to someone else’s post. (The person to whom your respond does not need to be in your group or even in your class! Just someone who is blogging about the same book!) Even though the format is online, your responses must be academic in terms of spelling and grammar. This is an academic forum, not a social media site. If you are inappropriate or non-academic in your posts, you grade will suffer and you may be put on technology probation.

Quizzes: You will have one reading “halfway check-in” quiz to make sure you are keeping up with the reading and actively processing and analyzing the text.

Discussion Group Work: 1-2 times a week, you will be meeting with your groups to discuss your books in person. The work for these sessions will be distributed and collected during class.

Essays: You will have weekly essays applying the Literary Theory concepts learned to the film or other media viewed that week. You will compose these essays during one class session, and peer review your group member’s work in another class session. Your final major essay will be the application of a Literary Theory of your choice to the book you read during the unit.
